| In and Out of Portland with Children |
By Jane Petrlik Smolik
This now classic guidebook has become the definitive resource for exploring the southern half of Maine with children of all ages. The idea for the first edition came about one rainy Memorial Day weekend in 1997 when the author had taken her two children to a local book-store. Looking over shelves full of Maine guidebooks, she was amazed there was nothing that specifically offered things to do with children. Surely with most of the population living in the southern half of the state and over 9 million tourists visiting annually, this was a book waiting to be written. Adventures for all four seasons are included. Locals as well as tourists will be delighted by this indispensable guide written by a mother. The author has included a table of contents as well as an index by attraction and an index by location. So if readers find themselves in say, Boothbay Harbor or Ogunquit, they can flip to the back and find out what to do in that town. Very clever. There is good reason this little gem is still going strong into its third edition.
